What I wrote seems even stronger in retrospect and I am glad I did not know just how close to death Rowland S. Howard was. Obviously I knew he was ill, but not the the dire circumstances. If i had know the full extent of that, it might have made me more hesitant, less honest, less brutal perhaps. I think the heroism is recognised in what I said. I hope so.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12866112966976780684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063381673702357248.post-6159181911020690332012-05-24T06:10:40.594+10:002012-05-24T06:10:40.594+10:00Good article. He's there, he wants to be there but he can't be all there. Liver disease effects mental cognition and physical performance. Rowland never cancelled shows because of ill health, ever. He wanted to be there to receive what was rightly his. Sadly it came back so late that he was already leaving when it arrived. Those shows are heroic. Each one took him a week to recover from. The album Pop Crimes also a struggle - between fabulous material and sometimes sketchy execution. He could only push himself so far. In good health it could have been twice as good. Even in that state he fried the competition. And yes his band were immaculately chosen and suitable.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063381673702357248.post-7462618929938783642009-12-08T00:38:17.708+11:002009-12-08T00:38:17.708+11:00This is indeed what I want to read, I hope it gets...This is indeed what I want to read, I hope it gets published. To read of this tragically great man is something that should be shared and admired. Outside of the small circles that know Rowlands brilliance, there is scant attention for a man who I can truly say, gave me some of my greatest moment of musical absorbtion, live and on record. Long may he survive and thrive, in whatever forms he is able to muster.Jbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02235597979803154645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063381673702357248.post-87514612638154391372009-11-30T22:49:28.312+11:002009-11-30T22:49:28.312+11:00Well it's the kind of thing I want to read...Well it's the kind of thing I want to read...DShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15287933905370786159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063381673702357248.post-87639408831311159222009-11-08T16:57:05.578+11:002009-11-08T16:57:05.578+11:00This is the kind of review punters want to read bu...This is the kind of review punters want to read but common media would rather complain about declining readership than do anything about it. Have been wondering what Rowland was up to. He also said in an NZ audio interview (find online) he could only work 5hrs a day on the album, due to sickness.

Those of us that keep up on his activities, via online, have known this for a while - i saw the first mention on YouTube a few months back and he admitted to it in an online interview a few weeks back.

Basically, he gets a liver transplant, or he's dead. I'd be lying if I said I haven't shed tears over that one.

I was down the front - cheering him on, esp the new songs which are fab - and got a bit teary at one point, I'd like to think I could travel and gig dealing with that !
